SAMINA ISLAM
SILENT VOICES
FEBRUARY 2017
Needlework and mixed medias.
Samina Islam’s work takes a critical view on social and cultural issues. While Islam uses a variety of materials and processes in each project her methodology is consistent. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work.
For this project Islam collaborated with the youth of Pakistan. She collected hand written letters, which had to contain some message to the world. It could be in the form of a poem or just direct from the heart. The youngsters were asked to submit any small object with the letter
“Silent Voices” speaks of a stifling society where one has to be cautious of what one says or does. The youth of Pakistan grows up controlling their self-expression. The feeling of having a bag over your head and not being able to breathe.
